
RIPON, Wis (WRPN)- Former Dodge County Sheriff Stephen Fitzgerald passed away Sunday night. Congressman Scott Fitzgerald announced his father’s death on his Facebook page and issued a statement on his website.
Steve Fitzgerald, dedicated fifty years to public service and law enforcement in Wisconsin, serving as Superintendent of the Wisconsin State Patrol, U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Wisconsin, Dodge County Sheriff, and President of the Badger State Sheriff’s Association.
He was Dodge County’s Sheriff from 1989 to 2002. He started as a police officer in Chicago and worked during the protests at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968.
In his statement on his father’s passing, 5th District Congressman Scott Fitzgerald says, “His integrity, leadership, and commitment to his community set a standard for all who knew him. My brother Jeff and I are grateful for the example he set and take comfort in the lasting legacy he leaves behind.”
