RIPON, Wis (WRPN)- The 2026 Sturgeon Spearing season on the Lake Winnebago System will come to a close today.
With the 19 adult females harvested Sunday, the 90 to 99 percent Winnebago System-wide harvest cap for adult females was reached. Spearers with an unfilled Lake Winnebago tag have until 1 pm this afternoon to harvest a sturgeon before the season closes.
With another 36-lake sturgeon harvested yesterday, the Winnebago System total includes 202 juvenile females, 662 adult females and 660 males. That brings the total to 1,524.
Many spearers continued to find good ice and clear water on the east side of the lake, with 21 lake sturgeon registered between the Pipe, Quinney and Stockbridge stations. The largest fish of the day came from the Pipe registration station. Trevor Theyerl harvested a 138.1-pound female that was 80.3 inches in length.
